Fire in Ukraine

Fire in Ukraine
by Dave Wright

A forest fire sweeps through the valley
Searing the sturdy
Incinerating the vulnerable.
In its wake:
           Skeletons of the elderly
           Cinders of the weak
           Ashes of the dead.

In the distance a mighty mountain weeps,
Its tears unable to extinguish the inferno.

Deep beneath its crust
A tempest of molten rock—
Roiling, boiling, yearning
To release a violent destruction.

A tremor.
A fissure.
A thoughtless miscalculation…A solution?

No. Not now. Not ever.

Who would witness the recovery?
